"Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes, The rest sit 'round it and pluck blackberries."

Family Bonding Time a.k.a. A Driving Screamfest

As we travel to Iowa City this summer we are taking a long road trip. I have planned on this for a long time. It will be one of the few moments in our life together when Justin will not be studying for something.

Tragically, there is not much between Salt Lake City and Iowa City. So, we decided to head to Las Vegas and say goodbye to the folks there, ditch the kiddos for a short escape, and then begin our oh-so-exciting road trip.

Here are the two options I have come up with so far:

Trip through the Midwest

Las Vegas, Nevada to

The Grand Canyon to

Mesa Verde, Colorado to

Denver, Colorado to

Kansas City, Kansas to

Nauvoo, Illinois to

Carthage, Illinois to

Chicago, Illinois to

Milwaukee, Wisconsin to

Iowa City, Iowa

Total Miles: 2483

Total Time Driving: 1 day 21 hours

Trip through the South:

Las Vegas, Nevada to

The Grand Canyon to

Alburquerque, New Mexico to

Amarilla, Texas to

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma through

Arkansas to

Memphis, Tennessee to

Nashville, Tennessee to

Nauvoo, Illinois to

Carthage, Illinois to

Chicago, Illinois to

Milwaukee, Wisconsin to

Iowa City, Iowa

Total Miles: 3037

Total Time Driving: 2 days 4 hours

What do you think?
Which path would you choose?
Do you have other ideas?
Do you think our van will explode with all this craziness?

There are maps on the sidebar so you can debate my summer plans as well. Come on, you know you want to spend your day mindlessly planning my life for me.

I see that most of you are on my side of the fence about sending E to kindergarten. Justin and my mother do not agree. I'm still leaning to no.

Just to put in my two cents. Wait on Kindergarten, school will come soon enough, why not be the oldest and most mature instead of really young. Personally I should have held Sam back and he's a May birthday. And besides you will be in a new place, why through in the craziness of learning a new school when you can just wait a year and settle in.
and... I pick on option A on the road trip (although my first choice would be for you not to go at all!) Mesa Verde is really neat, your kids might not appreciate it but you and Justin will. And Chicago is one of my favorite places anywhere, so thats on both lists. And Milwaukee is supposed to a great stop too.

I would pick the second option, south. Church history sites are always interesting, plus Tennessee is a cool state and I have sentimental attatchments there from our tome in KY. Nashville in particular is a cool city. Chances are very good you could score some excellent food on the road while you're down there, too. Your van may explode, but the chances of literal explosion are extremely slim. More likely you will be wishing it would literally explode. :) If you're going to do a road trip, do it up! Good luck with your choices!

P.S. If E is anything like our Sydney, for your sanity and everyone else's in the family, I would wipe your tears and send her on her way to kindergarten. It wasn't nearly as traumatic of a transition as I feared. Having said that, once you send them off, they're gone for good and life really changes. If you're not ready for that, or you think she may not be, there's no rush. There can't be enough said for one extra year of instilling positive values and examples. Again, good luck with the choice!

I'm on Justin and your mom's side... but it has nothing to do with Kindergarten readiness or what's best for E... just think about how NICE it would be to have only 2 kids at home for at least part of the day. This very fact is why I don't want another baby until Allison is 5, or very nearly there. I don't think I'm cut out to handle 3 at home.
