"Earth's crammed with heaven, And every common bush afire with God, But only he who sees takes off his shoes, The rest sit 'round it and pluck blackberries."

Help please....

.... I need a good book.

Usually I read children's books, but I'm in the mood for an adult book with substance.

Substance I don't want:

Gratuitous sex, violence, swearing.

Hmmm, adult book without gratuitous sex, violence, swearing.

I also don't like to be depressed.

I'm sorry but anyone who stays home all day with the kiddos doesn't need any tipping to the slightly insane side of being sane.

See how much sense that makes???? Exactly my point!

So, go ahead. Give me some suggestions.

Because I'm trying to stay off the computer, so I need a book for my 5 minute moments.

The end.

Have you read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? (That's one title, not two.) I can't remember anything offensive except for a plot twist that seemed like a cheap trick. That made me mad. But the book was so good otherwise it was worth it. The book was thought provoking, fascinating, a great read. The history behind this historical fiction was very inspiring. Some of it was hard to read because it was about World War II and the time afterward, but it was always hopeful.

I also like Jan Karon's Mitford series, but I don't know if that's as substantial as you're looking for.

I love Coming Home by Rosamunde Pilcher. Not particularly though provoking, but a good easy, nice read. While easy, it's not a "stupid" book if you know what I mean.

Have you read The Hunger Games? Maybe a little violent . . . well some people die, ok a lot of people die, but it is very good.

I hear that the Book Thief is good. And I really like The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Till We Have Faces, by C.S. Lewis. I love that one. It's adult, thought-provoking, and nothing gratuitous.

THE HELP is really good.

and i second THE BOOK THIEF (which is a young adult/teen book--but the story is fabulous--although it is sad--but FABULOUS! and the swearing is in german--so you really never know anyone is swearing unless you speak fluent german~:O)

I hardly ever read a book, "just to read a book," but these two books are collections of GREAT short stories that have amazing messages in them written autobiographically.

I actually read part of one of them at Aunt Barbara's house when Mark and I were in San Francisco for our twenty fifth wedding anniversary (I like to read a good book in a bubble bath...)!

One of the good things is that you can sit and read for a LONG TIME, which is what I did 'cause I LOVED THE STORIES, or it good for a "quick read" of one of the stories and you coming to a very convenient stopping point without feeling "cheated" that you can't go on!

The titles are: "My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, and Belonging," and "Kitchen Table Wisdom." Author is Rachel Naomi Remen, M.D.

Hope you find "just the right thing!"
